Conure with mis-aligned leg
My Sun Conure broke his leg a month ago. The spint was taken off a week ago, and recently he has started to use the broken leg again. The vet was quite good with him, and although he has regained control of the foot on the affected leg, there is a problem. When the bone was set, it was set about sixty degrees too far right. Now his 2 right toes point forwards, but his two left toes point towards the other foot. The foot is so off-center that he actually trips over it with his other foot when navigating a perch.
I know with humans, the bone would have to be re-broken and re-set, but I don't think that is wise with a bird. What can be done about this?
Answers:It has been, in my experience dealing with wild birds, that this would be a death sentence for the bird. However, seeing that it is a domestic bird, there are two options for you.
1. Take it back the vet that did the alignment and tell them they need to do it again. Was it a bird vet? The surgery would be a potential stresser on the bird, which could potentially kill it. However, if the vet did not take xrays after the original splinting and noticed how off the leg was, then in my opinion there is a serious issue with the vet and you should seek a second opinion.
2. You can do nothing. Your bird will eventually cope with it's new disability.
I don't know. Ask the vet.
Unless he is in pain, he will learn to cope with his little disability.
Make sure his perches if an inside bird are nice and thick (natural branches), and if an aviary bird make sure that the perches, run to the ground and at different levels, again nice thick branches so he can balance well.
Also make sure you have cuttlefish available for your conure at all times,(this will help strengthen bones) aswell as a varied fruit, vegi, nut, breads etc diet.
A Good nutritional diet is very important in keeping a healthy strong bird
If u r concerned about your bird, talk with the vet that dealt with him and ask if there r alternative things to do which will help your bird to recover more quickly.
Good luck, hope all goes well.
