Do Sparrows fly south for the winter2007-11-24 17:19:22

I am in the midwest and the temperature has been in the 40's during the day and 30's at night. I put a feeder out and most birds are sparrows . Am I keeping them here by feeding them or should I stop feeding them until winter. I have great amount that seem to count on the feed I'm putting out. What is your advice and knowledge? Thank You!

Some do.. but the ones we have here in the midwest that are most common are House Sparrows..

They do not migrate and do depend on feeders and handouts in winter to survive..

So go ahead and keep the feed coming! They are loving you for putting it out and will tell ALL their Friends to visit your house as well! :) Word is probably already out.

They also like Pnuts butter and seed mixed then smeared on tree trunks.. it will also attract woodpeckers, and other wintering birds you may not be seeing yet.

Use the cheap pnuts butter as they dont care if its JIF!

some stay and some go. Later this winter you'll get Jncos and house sparrows, and lots of jays. Your not keeping them around, when it gets too cold, they'll move ;)

Sparrows do not migrate. They will stay at your feeders if you continue to feed. If you are feeding them now, you should contunue to feed them throughout the winter.

There are many species of sparrow and all except the House Sparrow migrate. Some do not go far, while others migrate thousands of miles. You will have House Sparrows year round. You will probaly get White-crowned Sparrows as well as they migrate to the US for the winter and head back up to Canda to breed in the spring. You may have some other sparrow species as well depending on what state you live in.
