Do i need to worry about having a fire in my fire place around my quaker parrot
I would be very cautious. You didn't mention whether your parrot was flighted or not. Either way, as "Nanaboss" mentioned, using a firescreen is critical.
Nevertheless, I would probably keep a very close eye on your Quaker. Even though my little female Quaker is clipped, she can still zoom off a bit because Quakers are light birds as it is.
I get very nervous about heat sources and birds. I have a rule in my house that when the stove is on, the birds are out of the kitchen. I just know of too many horror stories involving things like this and I simply don't want it to happen.
Make a policy and stick to it, such as,
"When the fireplace is lit, the little guy is in his cage."
That way everyone understands the way things are. Open damper. Quaker in cage. Light fire.
This way you never have to worry about it.
Better to be systematic about stuff like this than have something happen you regret.
I'ld suggest a screen just in case. I'm sure you want to protect your parrot from accidental bad judgement. Accidents happen to even careful people and animals. Better to guard against it. I'm glad you asked!
I would also make sure that you be sure to burn NATURAL wood, nothing treated with any chemicals so it looks pretty, crackles, etc. The fumes of such could be deadly to your little buddy.
Hi
Everyone makes good points. I would only add that you should keep in mind that burning gas or wood in your fireplace can also add carbon monoxide to your air in your home..
Birds are very sensitive to this..
I guess if it were me. I would not take the risk really. Id put him or her in another area of the home at least. it only takes a second for something to go wrong and then how bad would you feel..
So dont forget about the carbon Monoxide risk as well. While it would not bother a human. a bird is MUCH more sensitive to bad air quality.
Good Luck
