Do they hurt geese and ducks to get down
I just watched a peta video with a poor goose getting feathers ripped out - is this a normal way of gathering down for clothing and bedding? It looks horrible. I'll buy a down alternative if consistantly cruel methods are used, does any one know? Thanks for your help?
Answers:I saw a show one time, where the down was collected from the nests. But they were only allowed to take 1/3 of it.
There was no pain involved to any critters. I am trying to find a link for it.

The finest, warmest and most rare down comforter in the world, Eiderdown is harvested from abandoned nests that the mother duck covers with down she plucks from her own breast to keep her eggs warm. The Eider ducks are protected from the usual commercial type of harvesting, and as you can imagine, hand harvesting after the nests have been abandoned, is very labor intensive and expensive.

Most products contain goose down because it is significantly less expensive than eider down. Eider down is collected from the wild whereas goose down is usually a by-product of raising geese for food. At present, eider down is collected for commercial use in Iceland where the wild eiders have become unusually tame after generations of down harvest. Eiders are not harmed from this harvest. The down is collected before egg-laying starts so that the female has time to re-line her nest. Much of the goose down used currently originates in China. Other sources of goose down include Canada and Poland.
