Do you own a lovebird
What does it mean when your bird gets moody all of a sudden and refuses to be around anyone in the family when usually he acts like a leech and just sticks on to us.
Should I be concerned?
Answers:It could mean illness or it could just be cranky because it is molting or it could be getting "hormonal" and looking to breed. It might be a good idea to get it a checkup at an avian vet.
That being said, my lovebird hen has a distinct behavior change when she is getting broody. She gets less interested in interacting with me and very focused on chewing paper. She also drops some weight right before she lays eggs.
Any change in a pets behavior could mean illness. Especially birds, they're more fragile than other pets, and are more likely to hide illness from even the most trusted humans. By the time you see symptoms, a lot of times, they're so sick they can't be saved.
That said, I think your bird might be moulting. I don't know how long you've had him, but once or twice a year birds will naturally lose all their feathers and new ones grow in. It's an itchy, moody, cranky time for them and sometimes they become a little antisocial. You can't mistake moulting. Feathers everywhere! The bird looks like it was dragged through a hedge backward and hung up to dry in a windstorm.
Unfortuantely, that is also a sign of illness. See a vet just to be safe. Like I said, they are fragile little guys and it's better to be safe than sorry.
