Featherless African Grey, Please Help2007-11-24 17:07:12

Ashie is an non-congo African Grey. I got him from a breeder that hand raised him until he came home to live with me. At the age of about 6 months somebody desided it would be better to move his cage, that's when he started biting off his feathers. He's now 5 years old, has no parasites, no infections, in fact the vet doesn't know what to do. He doesn't hurt himself because he just chews off the feathers, i wouldn't call it plucking. My poor little man looks like a hatchling with grown ups head. if anyone has any suggestions i would greatly apperciate it. thanks Candi.

The person above me (penny pickles) said almost exactly what I was going to tell you :)

One other thing is that since it's been years, it may be a habit now instead of a mutilating behavior. I really would recommend getting the "sock buddy" thing. It keeps those chewers away from the feathers long enough for them to grow back in, and you can keep making more of these "sweaters" as you need them. It really works and the birds love wearing them (I was skeptical at first)

Good luck!

It wont work on the wings, but you can try a couple things: I still would suggest the sock buddy, but you can also use the 8-in-1 Cease anti-feather picking spray. Don't use ANY other spray because there are chemicals in them that will damage the skin/feathers. This spray has just rubbing alcohol, water, sugar, bitter orange and aloe. (the alcohol is just to make it liquid and dry quickly)
