HTH good luck
If he has been doing this for 5 years it is life as he knows it now .. You should have tryed to get him help when he started..The post before me was true .. You need to reteach him more toys more on on one time reward him for not plucking out feathers ..Try an get him cage top trained let him out an fill the top with toys diff foods MANY MANY thinsg to do .. When you see him get pick snap your finger talk to him get his mind off hurting himself ..If you are not willing to spend the time to work with him could be a year or more I would find him a home where he can get more one on one time !!
NOT a good food choice!
Try Harrisons or another organic food. Seriously research that bird pellet.
You may want to consider changing the pellet brand.
Feather chewing can be a sign of inadiquite diet, even if it is AG specific, pellets are known to cause chewing in these guys. Also AG's do MUCH better on a more natural diet of cooked & fresh fruit veg & less pellets. A pellet diet with treats here & there isn't usually a good diet for AG. They're one of the few bird species that does require a different diet to others.
Also with the pellets (I don't know what ingredients your contains) but you should make sure they're 100% natural, no artificial preservatives, colours, flavours etc...
As everyone else has said, if he's been doing this 5 years you may not ever break the habit now but a change in his diet should still be done.
Ashie has developed a very bad habit and may be doing it to get attention. I suggest putting a cone around his neck to get his feathers to grow back and then Give him a calcium and mineral block to play with. Birds with low calcium and mineral deficiencies often chew feathers to recycle calcium and minerals lacking in their diet.Vary your birds diet with vegetables and fruit. Give toys that will have a treat in them but ashie has to figure out how to get the treat.
