Finch question
Finch question2007-11-24 17:07:13
My daughter has a couple of zebra finches and we were just wondering if other than a dna test,
is there a way to tell a male from female
perhaps a breeders secret?
we have heard the male has orange cheeks and female doesn't ?
Answers:You're correct!
"Male Zebra Finches have a black breast bar, chestnut flanks speckled with white, orange cheek patches, a scale-like pattern under the chin, and of course the red beak. Females on the other hand are totally lacking in any of these male markings and their beaks are a lighter and more orange color."
Yes, in most mutations, the male will have orange cheeks, brown spotted flanks, black chest bar (female sometimes have flecks of this) and zebra stripes. Males have red beaks, females orange. He will also sing.
The female won't have those.
If you happen to have a photo, we could tell you for sure. :)
