If so, heaps of cuddles, attention, quality time spent with your bird is the key, they love human companionship, the more the better.

Your lovebird should not bite if its handreared, but in saying that how old is he/she?

The younger the bird the easier to train, as mentioned above the trimming of the flight feathers may be an advantage for you, this will not mutilate or hurt your bird, or restrict his flying ability, he/she will still be able to fly, just not great distances.

Make sure that if you want this done, that an experienced person does it. (Well known pet shop or Vet.)

Both L and R flight feathers should be trimmed as apposed to the one side.

Now if your bird is a parent reared bird (aviary), this will take alot longer to calm them, ask your mothers co-worker about this.

Great to see your reading up on lovebirds, you will be a wonderful owner.

I have handreared my own peachies, they are 5 years old now, and just lovely, they can bite from time to time, but other than that, they are sweet little cookies.

DON'T THUMP THE BEAK. This can seriously injure the bird. Lovebirds really respond to a pinch on their beak, and it doesn't hurt them. Don't really try to pick him up for another day or so because he can get stressed out and get stick. Lovebird bites really aren't hard. If you pull away from the bite, it WILL hurt because the beak is sharp. When the bird bites, don't move, and usually the bird will stop biting within a day or two. If it doesn't stop biting, gently pinch the beak while it's biting you. I've never had a lovebird draw blood (no matter how vicious) so you don't have anything to worry about. Good luck with your new bird and let me know if you have more questions.
