Food native to Australia for budgies/parakeets
If there are some things in my reach, that I can offer my budgies and that mimicks their natural diet, I would like to do it.
Answers:I give my budgies and cockatiels grass heads from cooch grass and they LOVE it. I just tried them today with grevillia (or however you spell it) flowers, though this is mainly lorikeets, to see how they liked it. Apparently you can put bottle brushes in too. But I don't know so much about the flowers, but if you give them native grasses and maybe put some non-poisonous native tree branches in there so they can gnaw on (not necessarily eat) just to give them a little bit of a more natural habitat. You can give them things like sprouts (from the supermarket), lettuce (not too much as it can give them diarrohea) and try them with different fruit like apples. These aren't native but it adds variety to their diet. Do you have an avairy or cage?
I've been in the field and what the main staple of diet is, are insects. Now unless you want to go catch bugs and feed them, I'd feed them a variety of foods. Contrary to popular belief, birds don't eat many seeds in the wild. This is just a myth that has been passed on for century's upon century's!!
If you take this myth and look at it- the seed diet you are feeding your keets is all millet taken off the branches, and packaged in boxes or bags to sell as parakeet food. Some even come with vitamins sprayed on the shell. Keets crack the shell open and eat the middle, therefore leaving the vitamin coating useless, and on the bottom of the cage, and the millet itself is grown where? NOT in Australia, but in California. All millet is, is a stick of butter to your bird. It has no nutrional value what so ever.
