Hi my bird bert (budgie) has a feather falling out(1/2 way out but still hanging on) one of the majo2007-11-24 17:19:53

he is in alot of pain and can you please tell me if your birds or budgies have gone through this and what you have done to keep them calm through this?

never pull a feather out, just because it looks as if its ready! it could tear his skin or cause an infection.

My budgie (Moses) loses his main tailfeather every few months - its a healthy cycle to keep him in top flying condition. He gets irritable but not in pain, and he squawks more - it seems that he loses confidence in his flying ability - after all his steering is affected, so he flies in shorter distances during that time. He hops and wriggles a bit more, but its not pain

you should leave him in peace and not pester him while this is happening, his other feathers come out all the time, but only his main feathers attract his attention

MY AMAZON DROPS FEATHERS THIS TIME EVERY YEAR. ITS NORMAL. NEW ONES FOLLOW THIS RIGHT AWAY IN ABOUT 2 WEEKS. I THINK THATS WHATS GOING ON WITH YOUR BIRD! ? MAYBE? IF THERE IS NO BLOOD I THINK ITS THE NORMAL MOLTING.

Leave the feather alone and it will fall out by itself. If you should pull it out and it is still attached, the bird may lose a lot of blood and birds don't have much blood to begin with. What makes you think he is in pain? Is he screeching when someone comes near? If this is so, just give the poor bird some peace and quiet.

hold your bird firmly where the feather enters the folicle(on the wing,tail)and pull sharply holding the thickess part of the feather.
