How Do You Pair Up African Congo Greys For Breeding
What's the best way to safely introduce/pair up a young male & female African Congo Grey parrot to see if they like each other in hopes of eventually becoming a bonded pair for life?
I have a young female grey (fully tested, vet cleared healthy & DNA sexed); now I'm looking for her male counterpart to introduce together & see if they get along well enough to eventually become a bonded, proven pair & breed/hand-raise babies.
What's the best & safest way to introduce 2 young birds for the first time & subsequent future times to see if they will like each other safely so they learn to "play nice" & eventually form a bonded breeding pair? My girl is just under 1 yr. old; the boy I'm considering is just 1 yr. old, too.
I know it takes a few yrs. before they will sexually mature & breed, that's why I want to introduce them early. I am fully aware of "breed" vs. "pet" pairs, the hormone & behavior changes once they become a bonded breeding pair; I'm willing to take that on. Thanks!
Answers:Keep in mind that one WILL kill the other if done too quickly. Birds must develop a relationship FIRST. AFTER you do you 30 day quarantine period and both birds show no sign of illness. Take two cages and put them across from each other in a room for a week. Then place the cages next to ea ck other for a week and see how they interact. if all goes well, allow then both to come out of their cages and see each other face to face on their own cages. Allow them to Visit each other to see how they do together. In time they will decide which cage they like and enter together. Watch that they do not fight. The cage owner will often be hard on the other, if this is the case, get a third cage and place both birds there. But only after you are sure they have become dear loving buddies. Breeding may take years, they often spend those years bonding, before deciding to raise a family together. Now who's the Bird Brain? Their relationships usually last a life time!!
Well, I've never bred them. I have a Timneh and would rather keep her as a pet. I would suggest finding a breeder online or in your area that's willing to give you some pointers. Could possibly check with a good pet store, if you have one by you. Maybe try your vet, see if they can recommend someone who's a breeder near you. Good luck.
