How To Teach LoveBird To Accept My Hand2007-11-24 17:21:49

I recently rescued a beautiful PeachFaced LoveBird from a pet store. She is partly tame.. Getting on my arm/shoulder when I tell her to step up.. But she is absolutley terrified of my fingers, she leaps at my fingers and tries to bite when I get my hand too close. How can I teach her that my fingers aren't going to kill her? This morning she did fall asleep on the back of my hand, but I had my hand forming a fist.. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

My seven hand raised lovebirds who crawl all over me will bite my finger if I put it in in a 'poking like manner' This is normal behavior. It's defensive even if they know your not going to hurt them. A pet shop bird especially will show this, think of all the small children that saw her and poked a finger at her. Offer the bird your whole hand palm up, in a non threatening gesture. This means don't push up on her. If she doesn't want to sit on your hand, let it be. Think of what your hand represents. It is just a huge claw to her, and trust is the only way she'll accept that your claw wont hurt her.

can,t answer this queston but my wife had a peach face that would bite when a hand was extended with spread fingers and would not bite if the fingers were 'clenched' together.she had this bird for several years and this behavior never changed

just put your hand in the cgae for about 10 minutes every hour, then after a couple of days it should realise your fingers wont hurt it

or every time she tries to bite your fingers just give it a little hit(just a tap but hard enough for it to realise not to bite)
