How can I get my cockatiel eat new foods2007-11-24 17:20:24

I have tried many foods like apples,bannanas,lettuce,ect. some he seems to try but then he runs away like he hates it. The only thing he tried and likes was crackers and I cant give him those that often cause they have salt in them, He feeds on pellet diet. He is 9 weeks old.

from experience, dont feed a bird bananas..they get stuck in the birds throat cause its mushy..a good thing to try is a spray millet, they are sold in the bird section at stores. they make a mess,but birds love them, also there are bird fruit treats that are sold in the stores.

i raised one on pablum when the mother rejected him, hes still young keep the good cockatiel seed in the cage attach parsley and lettuce to the sides to, hes still a baby he'll develop the curiosty for other treats like apple and peach and they love the millet spray stems with the tiny seeds..good luck dont get impatient

Patience patience patience.

Keep at it and eventually he'll give in. If he is bonded to you, he wil want to try whatever it is that you are eating. If he is not bonded to you, try putting the new food over his pellets so tha he'll have to move the new food to get to his regular food.

Birds being social creatures will often mimic what their flock mates (meaning you) do. Sit down with your bird and some bits of apple, nuts (unsalted), frozen banana bits (very small), corn, peas etc and start to eat them in front of the bird. After a few moments offer the bird a bit of food (not food that has touched your mouth) see if he becomes more interested after you've shown that it's good to eat.

The important thing is he is on a pellet diet which is well balanced.
