How can I get my parakeets to eat something besides seed2007-11-24 17:20:25

I have two young budgies and they will only eat seed. I've tried popcorn, treat sticks, cantalope, apple, grapes, lettuce, pineapple and dried fruit. I've cut it big cut it small and even hung it from a special holder. I've mixed it with seed and left it seprate. I'm about to give up. Also, what is the best way to tame them? Mrs. Blueberry bit me this morning. They won't even let me get them out of their cage. *sigh*

I've had my budgie for about a year and a half now, and I'd say that it took at least 8 months before I would consider him 'tame.'

You have to do it in steps. First, just sit by the cage for a few days. Next, open the cage up and put your hand in there, but nowhere near your birdie. By seed, do you mean millet? The next step is to put a treat in your hand and get them to come to you to eat it. Millet is the best thing ever, so certainly try that if you haven't.

Anyway, just keep making baby steps like that and in a few months she'll be eating from your hand, and she won't be so afraid. Also, when you handle her, do it from a position where you're lower in height than she is. Birds like to be the tallest thing, and it scares them to have something hovering over them, like your hand. Also remember to reward her when she does something you think is good. Tell her how good she is, and coo at her like she's a baby, basically. Birds are social animals so she'll start craving your attention.

If they only want seed then feed them only that, but give them a cuttlefish for their beaks.
