I really love this canaries but I'm having a hard time getting them used to my hand ,they belong to a lady who couldn't take care of them anymore so they are not used to treats or hand tamed but I'm training them hard right now they eat from my hand but they get scared if I move my hand.. forget about getting them out of the cage.can you tell me what to do??
Answers:First of all do not try to approach your Canaries until they have become used to their new surroundings. They should reach a point when they remain calm and no longer flutter around nervously when you are doing things near the cage.
Then you should be able to reach your hand very slowly through the open cage door and offer your Canary a piece of fruit or a veggie. If he gets nervous withdraw your hand slowly and talk to him so he gets used to the tone of your voice.
Be patient and keep offering treats dont give up.Once your Canary has accepted your hand as the bringer of treats,he will soon hop onto the back of it or onto your out stretched finger.
Very important that you never try to force him or grab him.Good luck it is difficult to hand tame a Canary but if you follow these instructions and be patient it will eventually work.It did for me.
Your lucky to even get them to eat out of your hand. If your correct in identifying them as Canaries, they aren't really hand trainable. They're not like birds such as parakeets and cockateils/cockatoos and parrot family which has a higher level of intelligence. Getting them to eat from your hand is probably the closest you'll come to "training". Also, like having a mirror, as long as they are together, they will not form a bond with you because they have formed their bond with each other. Good Luck. They can sing beautifully though.
Canaries can often not be hand tamed. They are birds better suited for life in a large flight cage. A better bird for hand taming is the budgie or as many people call it the parakeet. If you are sure you want to tame your canaries it will take ALOT of time and patience. Keep resting your hand in there until they land on it. Once they land on it you are doing good. Then try adding a treat for them. Maybe some of their favorite seeds. Most people with canaries don't allow them out of the cage because they will fly away.
