There is a section above their beek that is usually a pretty good indicator. On males it is blue, & females it is tan.when they are very young, there may not be much color distinction, but it usually works!

It depends on their age. If they're about 5 weeks old, a female will have a blueish colored cere ("nose") above the beak. It might also be purple. Also, there will be white rings around the nostrils. Males will have more a pink-colored cere.

For older budgies, females will tend to have brownish or white ceres, and males will have blue ceres (some tint of blue to darker blue).
