How can I tell the sex of a Parakeet2007-11-24 17:19:55

I have three Parakeets. I usto know the difference when I was little but know im not shure.

Answers:

you tell the sex of a parakeet by the color of the skin right above the beack of the bird the females are most of the time like a light pink or a flesh color and the males are most of the time a pruple color like sometimes it can even look blue.

if the color of the bird is not solid yellow or solid white. The sere (part above the beak) when the bird is 3 to 4 months of age it will turn either brownish red for females or blue if it is a male. when they are younger it is a little harder to tell the females will usually be pearly white and the males will usually be purpleish blue but that is not always the case.

The Cere of a parakeet is the "bump" above her beak - and is in essence her nose. There are two holes in it that she breathes through. The cere lets a parakeet breathe and smell.

When parakeets are babies the ceres are often just blue. As parakeets age the ceres usually mature to certain colors based on their sex. Female parakeets develop brown or pink ceres. Male parakeets develop blue ceres. Of course, there are many ceres that are in-between colors. The only real way to know the sex of a parakeet is to take it to your vet and ask!

Other than going to a vet and getting a DNA test done, as far as I know, there really is no way. With tropical birds the brighter the color does not mean anything.the only birds that can be sexed by their color are Eclectus where the male is green and the female red..sometimes you can tell by the color of the eyes, not the feathers, try looking around on the internet for help..also, the amount of skin around the eye is sometimes an indicator.good luck
