How can I tell whether my umbrella cockatoo is male or female
How can I tell whether my umbrella cockatoo is male or female2007-11-24 17:19:56Answers:
Male umbrellas have jet black eyes, females have reddish brown eyes. It's really that simple and the rule applies with all the cockatoo species.
I thought that said cocktail umbrella at first, take it to the vets.
Birds are very difficult to do this with as they don't have external genitalia like mammals do. You can try to see how your bird reacts to other birds - male and female birds react differently.
There will be subtle differences in appearance a vet could spot that most people would miss.
I know with conures a blood test is required. Personally it never mattered enough for me to go that far. Funny story.we had a nanday named Tony that everyone thought was a boy.til it laid an egg. I guess it was really Toni.
There are only 2 ways to find out the sex of a bird from the parrot family except for parakeets and cockatiels. One is to have a DNA test done the other is to have a vet probe your bird.
If you take it to the vet, they can test it through DNA, thats the only way to be totally sure
There is no way to tell if a parrots sex just by looking, I have a green wing macaw and it had to have a sex test when It was a baby. Take your parrot to an avian vet and get it done that way the easiest.
with all birds there is only one way for a bird to be sexed and that is by a vet carrying out surgery, they always make the incision on the birds left hand side.
There is a couple ways you can tell. The color of the birds feet & beck or you can feel the vent, the wider it is it is a female so she can lay eggs eaiser. If it is small then it is a male. The best way is to have it sexed at an averian vet. Good Luck, Becky
The eye color (as mentioned already) is an "at home" way of determining if the bird is old enough. A very sure way is to have a DNA test done. It's easy, they just take a small blood sample and send it into the lab and the result come back in a couple of weeks.
you have ot go to the vet and have it blood sexed. unless it starts to lay eggs thna you know it is a female but that is the only way to know if it is male or female to have it blood sexed.
they say you can tell by eye color, males have black eyes and females have brown eyes
the only sure way is to have your bird surgically sexed by the vet
get someone u know who is a vet to tell u!
It requires a blood test (unless it starts laying eggs. LOL)
The only reason u would need to know is so that you can be very sure that if it is female it gets enough calcium an you can watch it to be sure it does not get egg bound
