Male umbrellas have jet black eyes, females have reddish brown eyes.It's really that simple and the rule applies with all the cockatoo species.

The eye color (as mentioned already) is an "at home" way of determining if the bird is old enough. A very sure way is to have a DNA test done. It's easy, they just take a small blood sample and send it into the lab and the result come back in a couple of weeks.
you have ot go to the vet and have it blood sexed. unless it starts to lay eggs thna you know it is a female but that is the only way to know if it is male or female to have it blood sexed.
