Male cockatiels usually have a blue area on the top of their beaks. They are also the prettiest of the species.

Look up the type of a tiel you have on Yahoo.

I have a perl tiel and the female has perls all over top and bottom. The pearling leaves the lower feathers and the breast of a male after the second molt.

So it depneds on what bird you have.

Look for bars on the underside of the tail. If bars are present, it's likely a female. Colors on a female are definitely more muted. The cheek patch on a male lutino tiel is quite bright. To me, males seem to be louder than females.

It depends on the color mutation of the Cockatiel. If it is the common "Gray" Cockatiel the male as he matures will have a full yellow head (all Cockatiels have orange cheek patches except for Whitefaced Cockatiels). The female will have some yellow but not fully yellow. "Pied" Cockatiels are a little harder to sex out by color. "Pearl" Cockatiels when the male matures will start loosing the pearl scalloped pattern and will become more grayish. "Lutino's" (yellow) is also hard to sex out visually except when mature the females will have darker yellow bars under her tail feathers. Male Cockatiels are more vocal than females especially during breeding seasons. They will carry off in long songs used to court females. They will also start tapping on the cage, perches, toys, etc. This tapping with their beak is also to attract females.

The males do the wolf whistle and can talk, the females don't. You can also send a sampling of 5 small chest feathers to Bio-tech in Florida and get it DNA sexed or go to the next bird show and they'll do it there. It'll probably cost you more than the bird, about $35.

You have to go by their behavior. If they are aggressive or mean it is probably a boy. If its shy or quiet probably a girl. I suggest naming it a b/g name like Stevie. Thats what I did!!
