How come my budgies dont like to be handled2007-11-24 17:20:31

Yesterday and the day before(when i bought them)they would let me touch them and hold them now they are afraid of me and they turn crazy when i stick my hand in their cage .what happened ? what could be wrong ?

Well, you just got them so they really do need time to adjust. I imagine they were probably still in shock when you pet them before. I've had many birds and the most important thing is that they get used to you. I got a parakeet from a family years back. She was pretty mean. I gave her some time and after a few months, I was able to hold her without any problem. One of the best ways to get them used to you is to start by using a dowl rod *like the perches in the cage* to pick them up. Get them used to being picked up by that both in the cage and then out. Slowly, after a while, start introducing your hand to pick them up *but out of the cage so they don't feel cornered or threatened*. It takes a LOT of time and patience, but I guarantee you it works. Remember, you are much bigger than them, so you need to appear as little a threat as possible.

they have to trust you before they will let you touch them. takes time but eventually they will sit on your finger it's all about being gentle with them. they have to get used to you.

Take it slow at first and let your budgie get used to you and its new surroundings before trying to get it on your finger. Most budgies talk, but not all. You need to be patient and repetitive when training your budgie to talk. Remember also that a talking bird is a mimic.

They let you handle them, at first, because the change to them was a bit of a shock, and they kinda "shut down" to deal with it. People do the same thing in stress.
