How do I stop Feather Plucking2007-11-24 17:20:41

Recently My LoveBirds Mate passed. She has 3 babies that she interacts with on a daily basis but now she is grooming herself almost every 10 minutes and Then Plucks out her feathers and Because of it Now the babies also help her what Should I do?

Birds generally mutilate themselves due to stress, poor diet, sudden changes in the household. In this case, 2 out of three resons apply here.

How did the mate die? It is possible that she killed him, and now she is lonely. I know that it sounds funny, but it does happen. She is stressed out because she is used to her mate being around, and suddenly he's not around anymore.

You need to get the offspirng out of her cage before they pluck themselves bald (of course if they are weaned, if no, you might have to hand feed them). Give her lots of thing to do, teach her some tricks, and so on. She will quit plucking herself if she is kept busy enough.

Do not try to get her another mate, she will probably reject it, and kill it.

Remember that lovebirds pick their mates for life (Hence the name of "Lovebird").

Stress.it is a killer. Your bird is suffering from severe stress.

Get her a mate, & if the babies are old enough, seperate them. Give her plenty to play with.check for mites, Take to a doc to see what he says. Feather plucking has to be unlearned!

I agree, you have to get your bird another mate. She is stressed and lonely. You could find her stopping to eat. Unfortunately if you don't get another there is a greater chance of this bird dying as well.

Your bird might be stressed because it's new,or you might have bought something that's bothering it.Like some perfume,or a toy it doesn't like,or a new bird.The only reason it's plucking them out is because it can't handle stress.i should know,i have one!
