How do I stop my Rainbow Lorikeet from biting me
My beautiful bird has gotten into the habit of biting me for no reason (and it really hurts!). I don't know how to get him to stop.
Also, does anyone know of a suitable bird that my lorikeet can live with?
Answers:I have a rainbow lorikeet and it is a real stinker! Lorikeets are not the best companion birds since they don't like to perch and generally don't like to cuddle. You have to speak firmly to it, scold it. Check out www.thebirdwhisperer.com. I'd wrap your bird in a towel to move it from cage to perch. You need to dominate and control the bird, firmly and kindly. Any parrot can be a companion to your lorikeet IF the lorikeet will accept it. My lorikeet shares a cage with a Jenday Conure. (conures are very noisy). Try an Indian Ringneck.
Quit putting yourself in its way.
blow on his face. the rush of air up the nose holes will cause him to release his grip. do not reward him with a treat, because then he will think in order to get the treat, he just needs to bite you.
for God sake stop wearing the popcorn necklace.
Shoot it. Rememeber, if it flies it dies.
Spray it with water every time or tape it mouth shut put a mussel on it
hold it and pet it. it will like you more
Lories should only be kept with other lories due to their diet.
When they reach 2 or 3 they bite more. It's maturity. Try not to react--the more entertaining you are when he bites, the more he'll bite you. Some can't be broken of the habit. I had a beautiful red-rainbow hybrid I raised from an egg who was the sweetest little girl. When she turned 3 she started to bite us viciously. She had no problem sitting on my head or shoulder or arm but if I tried to remove her with my hand, forget it.. She had a mate--her younger brother--and they laid plenty of infertile eggs together so that wasn't it. I still loved her dearly even though our relationship changed, and haven't gotten over losing her this year at age 15.
