How would I tame My 1 yr & a Half Male Cockatiel2007-11-24 17:21:50

I just bought this cockatiel today from a pet store. I don't think he was ever out of his cage. I'm unsure of how to handle him because I'm afraid of him biting me, Lil guy BITES hard. Any Anwser's to my problem. PLEASE HELP ME. I need to Tame him if he's going to be the Father to my Baby girl. I have another Cockatiel who was hand raised by my Aunt. So this will be the first one i raise by myself. & I NEED HELP..

Get a spray bottle. Everytime he bites you spray him with water. He will get the idea that biting is not what he should be doing.

If you just got him today give him about a week and a half to settle down from the move from the petstore to your place. It's hard on birds to be packed in a box and relocated to their new home which they have no clue where it is never mind if it's a home at all. What's going through there heads is; "What the H#ll are they doing to me"? So please be gentle at this time.

So start the training in about a week from now.

mine bites too..clip his wings and he will be depending on u more because he cant fly that should work but mine was already tamed ..to clip his wings use some scissors and cut the first layer of feathers at the bottom of his wings and that be it

Gotta gain it's trust first. Give him favorite fruits things and veggies. I had a hand fed Cockatiel and she never did get to where she'd be friendly with me. Sometimes it helps for them to see you eating something first and making ummm good sounds, then offer them a bite, keep doing it with different things and he'll slowly come around. Remember that birds need yearly exams and test same as any other animal. By the way, don't think that a bird cannot fly just because the wings are clipped.many can still go quit a distance with clipped wings and if you cut a blood-feather, get him/her to the Vet to stop the blood if you can't get it stopped at home. they don't have a whole lot to lose.

Take him to someone who knows what they are doing and have his wings clipped if they aren't already. If you don't know what you are doing do not try to clip them yourself, birds have a blood supply in feathers that are still growing and if you cut one of those your bird can bleed to death.
