How would you retrieve an escaped Macaw2007-11-24 17:21:51

He is 25 years old, never been out and is high up in a tree.

Answers:

Bring his cage to him and put his food inside with the door open. He will stay within a mile of his escape. Stay calm and sit quietly. If he seems like he might fly, try talking to him, or singing his song or what ever your thing with him is. Tell him he's a good bird, and make sure you have his Favorite toys and foods, almost too much for them to stand. Please let us know how you do. Also if necessary, it wet, they can not fly as well. Please keep flight feathers clipped. Your in my heart!

I would think putting out some of his favorite things.food, toys.in hopes it might attract him back to it.

Bring his cage out, where he/she can see it. Make sure some of his favorite food and toys are in it.

You can only hope he comes in on his own. You know than climbing up, in any way, will only chase him off. I don't know what kind of homing instinct macaws have, but, as for parrots and parakeets, I've seen several colonies of these birds, started from escaped pets. I wouldn't count on him finding his way back if he flies off.

As a last resort, you can stick your finger out, horizontally and go around shouting, "Heeeer birdy, birdy, birdy!"

when i have had a parrot escape, or helped someone retrieve one, we used a hose and sprayed the bird down. it sounds horrible but it was the only way to get the bird back.

if your bird is not 'spooked' too badly, you could climb up and see if he'll come to you.

normally, the fire department won't respond but it never hurts to ask.

once you get him back, i highly recommend you clip your parrots wings.

post flyers where ever you can atleast if some one in the next town traps him theyl know who he belomngs to.
