I have a baby bird with a broken leg from the hip How can I splint it so it can grow back normally2007-11-24 17:21:57

The baby isnt even a month old

when I was raising finches,

one of my females broke a leg,

I took her out of the aviary and put her in a cage in

the living room,

I splinted the leg with scotch tape

after about three weeks I removed it.

She not only lived but eventually,

set and raised babies

You may try a popsicle stick, but I think the best thing is to go to the vet it could get infeted

Birds are not likely to survive if they break a leg. Sorry to be blunt like that but it's basically true, I read somewhere (sorry I forget which book) that when birds bone break it affects their ablity to breath properly. If you can get it to a vet and they splint it there still is not a very high chance the bird will survive. I have taken injured bird to an avian specialist several times and they have all died. Young birds especially are hard to keep alive after an injury, I breed parakeets and have lost several to broken and or legs defected from birth. But if the little guy does make it the good for you.

You really need to take the bird to the vet. They are trained in how to do this properly. By doing it yourself, you could be doing permanent damage to the leg.

you can't and it'll die within a month or so. there's nothing you can do. don't pick it up as you will cause pain.the bird will end up depending on the good leg but at the same time he'll stay at the bottom of the cage so place water and seed down there. it dies from an infection that sets in the break.
