I have a cocatiel bird is it ok to get a parakeet and put them in the same cage after letting them g2007-11-24 17:22:03

I really want to get another bird.But i have a cocatiel and i dont want him to have any trouble thanks for all your help B well Bonnie

You will be able to take your cue from the way they get to know each other. Birds are social, and prefer not to be alone, so if the parakeet is the only other bird around your cockatiel will probably be fine with it. I've had parakeets and cockatiels in the same cage before and they've been buddies, but bear in mind that birds can be territorial, and they'll need to be separated until they get to know each other. When you're ready to let them interact bring them both out of their cages and see how they act together. Don't put one in the others cage until you know they're ok with each other. It may take them some time, but most birds would rather not be alone, so they'll probably be okay within a couple of weeks.

No don't put them in the same cage, becuase the cockateil will kill the parakeet. They will not get along well. I have two cockateils, friendly but strange lil fellows.

This might work if you slowly over many weeks or months introduced the birds and made sure they were friendly before caging them together. But there are no guarantees your cocktatiel would get along with a budgie or even another cockatiel. Even birds that have lived together for years can get aggressive with each other and need separated. You cannot just go out and buy another bird and toss it in with your existing cockatiel - it is his space and he will probably be aggressive. How would you feel if suddenly a stranger was tossed into your house? Get another cage for the budgie.
