I have a female parrakeet that has lost all of her tail feathers is it due to moulting
is it also from the other parakeets pulling them out in a fit of jealousy ?
Answers:Birds do lose their tail feathers during molt. In fact once a year they lose all of the body feathers over a period of weeks and grow a new set of feathers. Luckily its not all at once so your bird wont be bald. :-)
There is another reason that birds will lose their tails. In the wild if a predator is after a bird, the bird will release all of its tail feathers as a defense mechanism. If something frightened your bird that could be the reason. If she lost her tail all at once, this is the most likely answer.
You should be able to tell if it is molt, rather than a bad scare. You will see a lot of small contour feathers around the cage, along with the larger wing feathers. Birds molt from the tail up to the head. If this is what is happening please be sure to feed your bird very well, giving her calcium, like in a cuttle bone or egg shells, dark leafy green vegtables, like kale or brocolli (no iceberg lettuce. It will give her diarhea!), carrots, frozen mixed vegtables and whole grain breads. Some hard boiled egg is good, too. Her tail will grow back, no worries!
yes, just dont presure it alot or it will die.
It is not moulting, the bird could be self plucking out of boredom or if it is in with other birds it could be being bullied isolate it and leave a tv going to avoid it getting bored.
It could be the other birds attacking her. I would remove her from the cage and see if she looks better after awhile. But keep her near the other cage so the flock won't treat her as a new comer when you put her back in. Always make sure when you have more than one bird in a cage that there is enough room for them all to move around. If she is not acting sick nor are the other birds, then my guess is there are squabbles. Have you heard your birds bickering a lot? I would have her checked out by your vet to rule out any illness as the other birds will attack a sick bird.Good luck with this.
Well I had a parrakeet and its a female too.yes the do loose their tail feathers and they will grow back
If she is losing other feathers, it is probably just moulting. If not, it has been pulled out. If you have only a pair, split them up. If you have a colony, find the bully and seperate it from the rest. I know that is a lot of ifs, but without actually observing your birds, I can't tell you for sure.
Good luck!
