I have a parakeet with irritated forehead, what is wrong2007-11-24 17:22:08

I have 2 parakeets, one of them just above his beak, he keeps rubbing or scratching and it is making some of his feathers fall out and his skin show. the other parakeet is perfectly fine. I use a spray for such irritations and to keep their feathers fine, but this does not seem to help, Other than taking him to the vet, is there anything I can do, he is fine other than that, no signs of sickness at all, eating fine, playing fine, sleeping fine, stool is fine. Just seems to keep scratching his head on his perch. Only serious answers please. Thanks for the help. If there are any vets out there, your suggestions would be greatly appreciated and worth 10 points.

I know you don't want to hear it, but I'd say get the budgie to the vet. There is some sort of skin irritation going on and you want to nip it in the bud as soon as possible before it spreads (if it can/will spread) to other parts of the body or infects your other budgie. My birds have been battling giardia on and off for 6 months now, which causes skin irritation which causes them to pluck their feathers. Like your budgie, they also are otherwise healthy.normal activity level, sleeping amounts, eating, drinking, etc. So even if your bird is itching and that's all that it's doing, it could still be sick which only a vet could diagnose through an exam, bloodwork and perhaps even a skin scraping/biopsy in extreme cases.

I'm not saying that your bird necesarially has giardia, I'm just saying that if your bird has something that can be treated, it is best to get your bird into the vet as soon as possible so that you also aren't battling an illness for 6 months! ;) Good luck!

its probably molting or it has mites check with a vet
It could be an infection, or it could be molting, mites, or fleas (if birds get them, I'm not sure) I really don't know what else to tell you without talking about the V-E-T.
The bird could be allergic to the spray your using. If you purchased the spray for the irritation than maybe the bird has a 'head parasite.'

Call a zoo or your pet store and they maybe able to advise you better.
