Am I supposed to clip them, and if so how?
Answers:You should take him to the vet first, so they can teach you how to do it properly.
You can clip them yourself with cat nail clippers, or if you're a coward like me, you can either give her a concrete or sandy perch to wear them down or take the bird to the vet to get it done.
I use Sandy Perches and they seems to keep my birds' nails short enough, just make sure that there are also wooden and other types of perches available so her feet don't get irritated.
I would take him to a vet for clipping and checkup. Just think if you make a mistake doing it yourself how much pain you will put him in. It doesn't cost that much money.
You have to be VERY careful cutting a bird's toenails. There is a blood vessel in the nail that will bleed if you cut too much nail. The bird could bleed to death unless you can stop the bleeding
I would take him to a vet or a budgie breeder to be safe. You don't want to cut past the quick and rick traumatizing him of worse--infection. They can show you how to do it yourself next time.
Yes you can clip them with fingernail clippers, you should be able to see the vein in the nail, clip just below the vein, also keep an eye on its beak as they also need trimmed sometimes, I would take it to the vet for the beak trim.
I always just use regular nail clippers. Just clip off the pointed part at first unless it's nails are pretty clear and you can see the quick. Before clipping nails or wings make sure you have styptic powder on hand to stop any bleeding that might accidentally happen. Birds blood doesn't coagulate as quickly as ours does and they can't afford to lose much blood.
u can but ittl only stress his/her oit. get them a sand pirch, ittl do its job great!
it chips aways the nail and birds feet will love it!
The best thing to do would use a nail filer and just sand them down a bit. It would also be good to get a sandy perch so they dont get long in the future.
Many pet shops will do this for you in their grooming department. I hate to use sandy paper, because I would not like to perch on it, so why would my bird?
use nail clippers
