I have a pet bird who remains dirty the whole day should I give it a thorough bath2007-11-24 17:22:10

My pet bird smears itself with it's droppings. Some people tell me to leave it as it is while the others tell me to give it a thorough bath. I am completely distressed as I cannot show it to others due to its dirty appearance.

Yes, birds do need baths. From what I've read in books, you just put it in the sink (providing it's not a huge bird!) and spray it with a spray bottle filled with lukewarm water. I can't remember what else it said to do after that, but if it lets you I guess you should use a cloth to clean him off too. You might want to consider giving your local pet stor a call to see if they have a bird friendly soap/cleaning solution that would freshen it up. Good luck!

i'm wondering why your bird gets so dirty, they don't usually do this, it's very important for them to keep their feathers in tip-top condition

yes you can bathe your bird, make sure water is warm and then make sure room isn't drafty

ok-first clean your birds cage at least 3 times a week because droppings can bring sickness..second birds need to take baths..my parakeets take baths all the time with fresh water not hot or cold, and that keeps them clean and healthy because if they dont take a bath they can die from the dirt on their bodies.
