I have budgies and lovebirds indoors and have now got an infestation of small moths2007-11-24 17:22:18

The moths breed in the ceiling cracks and maggots walk all over the ceiling. I have been hoovering them up and putting them in the bin but they keep coming. Can anyone suggest a moth killer that will not affect my birds please

yes! go to the store and get the cheap fly strips and hang them everywhere. dont bother with the expensive moth traps. always freeze your food and only keep out what you need for a couple days. keep that food in an airtight/sealed container. its gonna take some time but its safe for everyone..hang them everywhere but dont hang them in their cages. hang them right beside them (out of reach) and everywhere you see the moths congregating. one will get trapped and then that one will atract more and more and more.. good luck. time is your secret right now. its gonna take some time. smile.

Let the birds out they will soon get rid of them for you. They will go back into their cages eventually.

Its from the feed, throw out the seed and clean your walls and spray the area with bug spray. Make sure the birds are in another room for a few hours, Next buy new food from another source and keep it in an airtight container in the fridge.

Soap tends to be very effective for killing insects. Move your birds out of the way and spritz the moths and any visable larvae and wipe them all up in a paper towel. Just mix a little dishdetergent with warm water, it doesn't create any harmful fumes. Store your feed in the fridge or freezer to keep the moth eggs from hatching. If you find them on a surface where you can sprinkle a fine layer of powdered detergent or borax it will kill bugs who crawl through it but animals are unlikely to lick it up it tastes horrible. The easiest way to get rid of the moths is to keep the cages clean, change the bottom paper every day. Also the moths come from the seed bags. Freeze new bags for 48 hours before opening. this will not kill all the eggs, but, will kill most.

you should really have these birds outside if you have got moths , you have to think about your family in situations like this there are a lot of respiratory problems you can get and the most fatal being psittacosis , (you can die from this ) , as for the moths if you have these birds in your house then let them out they will eat most of them , if you cant do that paint over the ceiling the paint will kill all of them . , hope this helps , "B"

they are seed moths. i just put any new bag of food i purchase in the freezer overnight. that seems to help along with leaving the food in an airtight container - in the friidge or not - whichever you prefer.

You can stop this by keeping the bird food in the freezer.I had the same problem,and I read this somewhere and tried it .It worked!
