I have found a hurt bird, what do I do2007-11-24 17:22:39

I foud a hurt wild bird. The bird looks like a predator got to it. It has minor bleeding, loss of feathers, and maby a broken leg. It's not very good at keeping it's ballence. And as for flying, it flaps it's wings, but that's it. What should I do?

Answers:

Go to a near by animal shelter or even a pet store, to start with close the lights, and make no noise at all (it will calm the bird down), you might want to get a large bandage to stop the bleeding, give a many types of treats such as earth worms, rice or fruits(try apples),give it water, and find something to warm to bird (towel?). MAKE SURE U GET AN EXPERIENCED HELPER AFTER!

take it to the vet but in the mean time give him bird food and treat him with care.

Take it to a vet immediately because you don't have what it takes to care for a bird that has sustained that much injury!

wrap it in a towel or blanket and take it to a nearby animal hospital. that's what i did.

I know its sad but the best thing for you to do is probably leave it be and let nature take its course. If you do choose to do something put it in a box with some warm nesting material (cut up newspaper or old socks work) and some water. If its going to be okay it should get up and fly away on its own shortly so make sure its not inside your house. If it doesn't you could try contacting animal control and they may be able to put you in touch with a wild animal rehabilitation center. Above all remember that birds can carry some VERY nasty diseases so be very careful, wear rubber gloves (even dishwashing gloves will do if its all you have), and wash your hands really well. it probably wont survive through the night. but if it does, and you havent yet brought it to a vet, call your local wildlife rehabilitator.
