Do you know why a woodpecker would want to chop wood?

thats how they eat,they'll find a bug infected usually dieing tree's and peck out holes to eat the bug's,ant's whatever

Well just in case you are not having a luagh at our expense its because when they tap the wood it takes off small pieces in order that they can get creepy crawlies like wood lice etc to eat, But i know what you mean i walk down out local woods & it sounds like they are really laying into them, I mean is there a sound when a tree falls & no-one is there to hear it
