I have to parakeets how do i tell what sex they are and how often should you get their wings clipped

If you look at a budgie's face, there is a ridge area (the cere) over their beak. Once they hit adolescence, the cere will start to change color. If your birds are still very young, you can't really tell with DNA sexing, which can be done at your local vet's. The cere will turn blue-purple if it is male, and brown/pink if it is female.

As far as wing clipping, that is all a matter of opinion. You DO NOT want to clip them so severely that they drop like a rock. You risk severe injury and even death. The ideal clip will let them glide a few feet to the floor, allowing them time to land safely. They cannot maintain steady altitude, so they won't fly circles around you. Things to always make sure of: ALWAYS clip BOTH wings. DO NOT ever let someone clip only one wing. This throws the bird off balance, again you risk severe injury if they crash into something. Try not to leave the last primary feathers intact. Leaving the last 1 or 2 may look nice but these feathers are no longer protected, they can get caught and broken, causing pain and bleeding. Birds don't have much blood in their tiny little bodies, so any bleeding is a very bad sign.

If you want your birds to be clipped, take them to your vet or to a pet store that clips. They will usually teach you how if you request to learn. I clip my birds at home. Clip 3-4 primary feathers from each wing and let the bird fly. If they can still maintain altitude and speed, clip 1-2 more on each side and test fly them again. Small birds, budgies, cockatiels, lovebirds, can fly with almost no primaries left. You will gradually notice over a few months that the bird will start to fly better and better. Take them in to get clipped again then.
