I just got a parakeet, but he will sometimes peck at me and climb on the side on his cadge when i pe2007-11-24 17:22:51

can anyone help me? i'm 12 and i don't know about training birds. ;_;

You must be patient. I have two parakeet's and they just don't like to be touched. But if you work with them everyday and be gentle and keep your bird fed and watered and keep the cage clean properly he'll come around and let ya hold and touch him.

Why did you get an animal that you know nothing about? If he climbs away from you and pecks at you, he probably doesn't trust you or hasn't been around children much. Show him that you can be trusted.

Put bird food into you palm and put you hand into the cage and let the bird come to your hand and sit on it and eat out of it. If it will allow you to bring your hand out with it on it then do so and just let it sit there and eat. Do not try to pet it. Birds do not like to be petted but they can be taught to like it. Do this for a day or so or until bird will allow you to gentle touch it's head. One little touch and withdraw you finger slowly. Alway move slow. A bird sees everything very large and so we can see why it would be scared at first. If you move slow and take you time it will start to trust you. Good luck.

he is afraid. wait for him to get used to his surroundings. let him get used to you. talk to him and soothe him.then when he starts to sing pretty loudly in front of you, take some food in your hand and offer it to him. if he eats then put your finger by his feet and he might perch on it. once you think he trusts you then you can pet him. just take it slow. it could take a weeks time for him to get used to you. you have to make him kno that your not going anywhere and he isnt either. hope this helps

He is just scared and he does not know you it takes time too. Let him get used to you I had a parakeet for two monthes and it is just getting used to me!

I got birds about 3 years ago. I would first open the cage door and put your hand in the cage for at least 45 minutes a day for a week, than after that hold a perch in front of it's feet so it will climb on the perch for 2 weeks, than start holding the perch closer to your hands and fingers. It worked with my two parakeets, and I'm currently training my two lovebirds. Good luck.
