I need to learn more about my cockatiels2007-11-24 17:22:30

We got one back in Aug. and the other Spet. we are going out of town for a week. some say they will be ok to gave eought food and water. but some same it's to long for them. What to do?

I was once away for two weeks with two cockatiels. They should be fine for one week as long as you leave enough food and water for them. They will miss you, but they will be ok.

I would try to find a friend or relative who can care for the birds in your absence. A bird has high metabolism and may not live 24 hours without food and water. There isn't any way to reliably give the birds enough food and water to know it would last for a week, food gets thrown, soiled, wet, etc, and then is inedible and water becomes dirty and even if you have an automatic dispenser, those dispensers can develop a leak or fail to let water out at all.

Its just too risky to leave birds that long unattended.

Its far too long, over night would be ok but they need fresh food and water daily. get a friend our nabour to feed them or why not take them with you.

i have 4 cockatiels and i would never consider leaving them for more than a weekend alone. Too much can happen in a week and they will go thru there food and water supply (it doesnt matter how much you give them) Please dont leave them home for that long. Find someone who will keep them for a week. I have had cockatiels all my life and i know a week is too long. Surely you can find somone trustworthy to watch them for you. Good luck and i hope you heed the advice .

A week is a little long. See if you can have someone check on them. If not when you leave food and water out leave enough for 2 weeks. Better to leave to much than not enough.

If you have a small crate you can also put some perches in it and the food and water bowl on the door and take them with you. I have done this many times with my birds and they traveled well.
