I think my tiel is laying an egg2007-11-24 17:22:34

I thought he was a boy but i guess i could be wrong maybe? Hes sitting in the one corner of his cage and when you go near the cage he gets really mad and hiss'es and snaps at me. hes tearing up pieces of the newspaper in that corner and every once in awhile he goes under the paper for a few short seconds. Could this be him or her laying an egg? I know about tiels but ive never seen one lay.

To tell if it is a male or a female cockatiel look at the underside of the tail. Male cockateils have solid coloration and females have striated feathers. If your cockatiel has the striated tail feathers she may very well be laying. Many female birds lay unfertilzed eggs from time to time. If she does, leave the egg in there for her to tend until she loses interest. Otherwise, she may lay another to replace it. Laying eggs depletes her calcium stores. Keep a close eye on her for straining and listlessness and a bulge near her vent that does not go away. This may be a sign of eggbinding. If this occurs, get medical help.

If your cockatiel has solid tail feathers, he may just be temperamental (of course, a female cockatiel could do this too). Many parrots take out their frustrations on cage paper. Try giving your bird some time alone and play with it when its demeanor has improved. Not enough attention can also cause a bird to become angry.

well it sound like she is going to lay an egg or 2 or 3 or 10. unless you have a male in the cage than there will be nothing in the eggs. but dont take out the eggs right away or it will want to make even more! or it might get depressed from haing its "child" taken away. so you can move the cage toys and axcesories around and tht might help it from getting to attached. try taking the egs out in a couple of weeks or when it desnt pay attention to them anymore.hope this helps!!
