I want to know why my sons pet cockatiel is losing his feathers2007-11-24 17:22:38

My son's cockatiel is farely young , we got him from a pet store about 4 months ago. He has just recently started to lose his feathers and he looks smaller than he did just 1 month ago. He did have a change in his normal setting , he was in the family room since we got him and we had to move him into my son's room for about 2 weeks, that is when I started to notice the change in him, as soon as we were able to bring him back to the family room we did. He has been back in the family room for about 1 week and I still think he looks sickly. Having a pet bird is knew to us. If some one can give me some pointers it would be greatly apperciated. We want to give him the best care we can

Birds molt once or twice a year. This is a natural process where all the feathers are replaced gradually. Normal molting is a gradual process and there should be no bald patches. Feathers fall out and new ones grow in to replace them. Is this what you are seeing? If you think the bird is losing feathers excessively or is losing weight, these can be signs of illness. Please take your bird to an avian vet.

The cockatiel might be molting. Otherwise, this could be from anorexia or feather plucking. Try to notice how much he's eating, is it the same amount or a small amount? If something seriously bad happens, contact your nearest avian vet. Otherwise, this doesn't sound too bad. (A new setting shouldn't make a bird lose it's feathers.)
Don't worry they are just molting they molt between the diferent seasons. They'll be fine.My birds are molting too.ok! So there is nothing to worry about!
