The parakeet is one of America鈥檚 most popular pet birds. Their small size, bright colors, and cheerful disposition make them perfect pets. Parakeets come in a large variety of colors including pastel blues, yellows, dark greens, violets, solid whites and almost limitless combinations of the same.

Young parakeets can easily be trained to sit on your finger. It is calming to listen to their quiet chattering and chirping. Some parakeets even learn to talk! They are playful and inquisitive, wanting to know what makes a bell ring and 鈥渨hat is behind that toy.鈥?Parakeets normally live seven to twelve years, with some living much longer.

Bird are great in pairs if they are male and female. Yes, you might have to deal with babies sometime down the road. If you want a bird as a buddy, you will only need 1 bird.

Lovebirds are great by theirselves. You don't need a pair. Cockatiels are also great in pairs. But they are also are great by theirselves.

Do some research before you buy any bird. It will save you trouble down the road.

I think you're on the right track, starting small is always a better idea than getting yourself into something too deep. I like cockatiels, they're not my favorite only cause I've met some REALLY nice ones, and I've met some REALLY mean ones. Rather lovebirds, and budgies I've never met one that was mean. I personally started out with one lovebird, who is a total sweetie, then I ended up getting him a friend, and they ended up hating eachother so they're seperately caged, which I would recommend anyway not only because then they won't mate or have the urge to mate and become territorial, and also they will bond to you and not to eachother! Lots of birds fall into this category, even if both birds are the same sex, they can bond to eachother, and then you will prety much become non existent.
