If i add grass to layer mash ,will my hens lay as well Is a chicken tractor a good idea
I give my hens grass clippings, but I don't add it to the mash, I put it in the chicken yard for them to pick through. It does not seem to affect egg production -- in fact, clover and dandelion leaves are high in protein and the chickens know this -- they go for those first. Greens also have the very positive effect of giving the hens something to pick at besides each other. (During the heat wave this summer, when it was 100 degrees for days here, they were really crabby and picking a lot even with good nutrition.) Just be sure there are no lawn chemicals on the grass to poison the hens. Regarding a chicken tractor, I've never used one, but chickens do dig pretty deep and might make holes in the lawn. So if you do, move it every day. (I have on occasion used a cage with no bottom to allow a hen with feathered-out chicks to scratch and peck and dustbathe while still safe from roaming dogs and cats and it works pretty well. )
mmm i dunno really . if they have some area to roam around in they will lay pretty good . it might just be me but it seems like if i just give them alittle treat of some kind everyday they lay more . just alittle bread .. anything to let them know you love them lol . i just feed mine corn scratch with alittle "meat-builder" mash .. and let them roam the yard . 8 hens are giving me about 60 eggs a week.
