Im thinking of getting some ex-battery hens- will they lay eggs once I have them
Yes, maybe not every day. They'll be in a shocking state when you get them and will need feeding up. They'll probably have bald patches.
Don't forget they'll be used to living indoors under artificial light and have never seen the sun, rain, grass, snow, insects etc. They won't have a clue at first. They may even have trouble finding the food and water so keep an eye on them.
Gradually their instincts will reassert themselves and they'll settle in, but at least one of them will be aterrible bully and you may have to seperate them.
They may also stop laying and go through a moult soon after you get them; battery houses tend to clear out their stock just before the moult is due.
Give them oyster grit for calcium and get some vitamins for the water, and feed them up.
yes it may take some time for them to settle but they will lay .good luck
Yes They Should
But They May Need A Little Time Just To Settle And Feel Free,
Good For You
Yes but they'll be in a right state and it will take them a while to adjust. Plus they will probably be sold once they are past their peak laying days are about to come to an end so don't expect miracles.
I think it's really nice of you to free them from their battery hell though. you should get a badge.
Yes, I was a farmer and used to buy ex -battery hens. It does the heart good to see them enjoying going free range, and enjoying the outside life. In about a month they start to lay and it's great to see that.
