Is it best for a cockatoo to have another birdy companion2007-11-24 17:24:08

If so, at what age is it good to introduce a new little friend?

Answers:

We have 2 cockatoos and they could care less about each other. They're much more interested in getting attention from us for themselves. I've found them to be the emotional of birds and require the most personal contact or they won't shut up. It's macaws that need a companion because they're so smart and need another bird for companionship to keep them out of trouble.

YES ANY AGE
Cockatoo, the huge white bird, or cockateil, the small grey bird.

Depends on if you want the bird to be your companion or a decoration really.

Once a bird gets a buddy, usually they bond with the bird, and dont care as much for you.

Cockatoo's are very loving, and therefore somewhat needy. how much time are you spending with birdie? How old is the bird?\

If she's loving and socialized, I personally wouldnt get her a companion, she wont be as loving toward you (in my experiences at least). Toys however are loads of fun for her and you, especially if you're concerned about her being bored. Leave the tv on, or radio. My eclectus loves to yell at the dogs and meows at the cats. She's 5 1/2 years old and doesnt have a friend. She does have other birds in other cages she can talk to/yell at.

Yes it is, i had a cockatoo for about a few weeks and it seemed like he was changin since he was in the pet shop with many other cockatoos, so i think it would b better to get another cockatoo, or if u wanna get a different bird 2, do some research 2 c if they would get along together. i hope i have helped! :)
Same thing with many birds. If you have enough time to spend with your bird and you give her the love and attention that all birds demand.then you dont have to get her a mate. Especially if you want her to stay as close with you as he is or could get. On the other hand.if you work alot or arent home alot.getting her a friend is something i would say you NEED to. If your not there enough this could cause big emotional problems that can lead to feather plucking along with many other things. I would just like to add that the kitchen is a dangerous place for birds. Not only with things being hot but the fumes and things that food releases while cooking can be very toxic to a bird.
I've always heard that if you want a socialized bird then it is best not to get it a feathered companion. It will bond to that bird and may not be very approachable. We had 2 lovebirds and after one died the other became more sociable toward us.
Your Cockatoo is bonded to you and humans, she was handfed and socialized with people,. she will have no interest in other birds. altho she may enjoy the chirping of another bird when no oine is home, she will just be jealous seeing you spend time with other birds. not true for all but a good base to think about
