Is it normal for a parakeet to eat the newspaper at bottom of its cage
This is my first time having a bird so im not too sure if he is trying to make a nest or what?
Answers:it's normal I always see parakeets, cockatiels, and other parrots chewing on newspaper.
Parakeets don't make a nest like wild birds, they need a wood box and generally do not line it with anything.
I doubt your parakeet is actually eating the newspaper, rather he is likely just playing with it - in which case it is being shredded. You might try putting some wood toys in his cage to play with - or a rope he can have fun unraveling. Most pet shops that sell birds will carry these items.
Be extremely careful about toys that unravel. My poor little parakeet unraveled the thread on one of those toys and somehow got caught in it and hanged to death. The thread didn't unravel all the way open and her little head got stuck in the opening. It was horrible and heartbreaking.

They will shred it and toss it around; he is just playing.
I give my bird crumpled up pieces of newspaper sometimes and they have tons of fun with it.
Please make sure that it is black and white newspaper only, some of the color dyes used on front pages and advertisements etc can be bad for them.

This behavior is normal..all he is doing is chewing it.try also some Wooden toys.he just needs something to do..birds get bored,just like us.good luck with your need friend

Yes perfectly normal!! Has he other toys to play with? Alternate toys ,so he does not get bored with them. Provide him with lots of company,and talk to him often.

They're not eating paper, just shredding it up to make a nest. Yes, it is very normal. What I did with my cockatiel was cut the paper shorter, then she did not have a tent to play with, and a mess for me to clean up
