Is it normal for my Cockatiel to sleep around 13 hrs2007-11-24 17:24:10

If u tell me to go 2 tha vet, tell me y. & what other foods should it eat, how do i no what it likes? (besides Cockatiel food)

10 to 12 hours is normal and common. Less than 10 will get you a bird whose health becomes compromised.

yup .. parrots (yes your bird is technically a parrot) sleep a lot. In the wild it is important to sleep when not foraging to conserve energy as well as it being very very wise to sleep motionless through the long nights when the majority of the predators are out and about.

For any parrott to be healthy they need at least 12 hours of sleep.

I recommend going to a pet store and getting a book.

Pelletted diets are great to feed with small amounts of seed.

Yes, a healthy bird will sleep an average of 12 hours. Your bird can eat anywhere up to a third of its body weight, and seed sohuld only be given as a treat, if you're going to feed your bird solely pellets you might as well just feed him cheerios! Put it this way, your bird should mostly eat fresh fruits and veggies daily, and MAYBE a teaspoon of seed ad a teaspoon of pellets. That is if you want your bird to be truly nourished. They won't die if they just eat seed, however later on in life they can start getting fat deposits that turn into tumors, and they are much more prone to fatty liver disease which will kill them! Healthy servings of melon is good for the liver, it helps clear it out! Good luck, I hope this was helpful!

Cockatiels are either really active or really lazy it depends on the bird. If the bird is really unresponsive to you and lethargic, then see a vet. But if it goes through bouts of perkiness then I am sure it is Ok.

Given them a taste of everything.like vegetables, fruits, breads, crackers, cooked pasta.I would get a book on cockatiels and read it cover to cover.

As for if it doesn't like something.it will let you know.it won't eat it.

Now if it is hand fed and really picky and weird (like mine) they will want to see you taste the food first.(as if you are really trying to poison them)

but be careful just because they like it doesn't mean they should eat it.

mine like wine coolers..nothing worse than a drunk bird.they really run off the mouth (lol).
