Is my cockatiel bleeding to death
I just noticed some blood on my cockatiel's left wing. It doesn't appear to still be bleeding and she doesn't seem to be in a lot of pain. I tried to secure her to look at it but we were both too scared. How would I be able to tell if she was in a lot of pain? Do I need to take off work tomorrow and take her to the vet or can I wait it out to see what happens? She doesn't seem to be behaving any differently, though she looked like she might fall asleep on my knee today. Any help would be great! .
Answers:Sounds like she had a blood feather break.
When the feathers are growing, there is a vein-like structure that pumps blood into the feather shaft through the quill to promote the growth. Sometimes, it doesn't "cap off" properly, and the shafts stays filled with blood. You can observe a blood feather by holding a bird gently, but firmly, spreading the wing, and looking at the underside. You'll see the bright red or purplish feather shaft.
Blood feathers can break very easily, and bleed quite a bit. There is a great risk of bleeding to death if the blood feather breaks. Putting blood-stopper on it will not do it - you'll have to pull the feather out, first.
Here is a website with a step-by-step guide on how to do this. First determine that this is the problem before removing feathers. If you are not comfortable doing this, please take the bird to the vet in the morning.
