This is an EMERGENCY

This is an EMERGENCY2007-11-24 17:16:24

There is a wild bird with a broken leg outside. We caught him, and put him in a warm shoebox in the garage. What else can we do? He is breathing, but very lightly. Is there anyone who can help me?

Answers:

The bird is in shock. The shoe box was a perfect idea. don't go digging up worms, wild bird seed and if you can get to a pet store get some meal worms. Do you have a cage to transfer the bird to, or a larger box? Keep it safe, but remember bird cannot see in the dark.

As for the leg. Can you line it back up. where is it broke? can you splint it up? Tooth picks with the points removed, and first aid tape? it may be worth a try, but don't be surprised if it dies. Can you afford a vet?

Adult wild birds do not adapt to humans well at all. Try not to handle it. They usually die from shock quickly and that is why the box was a perfect idea.

There are so many other things I could ask but it's hard without seeing the bird myself. Can it still grip with its toes?

Search the web for Injured Wild Birds...maybe you can find out more.

take him to a vet
Call a vet or a wildlife rehabilitator. They are the only ones QUALIFIED to take care of the bird. Look in your yellow pages and start calling. This bird needs medical care ASAP because of shock.
I will try. I had 3 baby crows fall from my tree in the front yard, I put them in a blanket filled cardboard box lined with paper towels for easy cleaning of poops, over the first night, 1 didn't make it, the other 2 I raised. Unfortunately, crows are not protected by the Wildlife Association, so no one would take this bird type in any animal facility to help their life. Find out what type of bird it might be, and wear protective gloves on your hands when handling birds. So this is what I did.. get an eye dropper, or a pet medicine vile and mix some bread with water, or anything of substance that will become soggy in water and suck it up into the suringe, and feed the bird that way. He should open his mouth to eat, and if he doesn't he might be too bad off. my email is chrissy_ptrsn @yahoo and I can fill you in with more details on how I did it. Please dont hesitate to ask. Keep the bird warm and feed it. If you crush up worms to a puree and feed them that way too.. just think about how the mommy bird regergitates her food for her babies, and how she lays on them to keep them warm...
If the bird can fly, then let it go, because many wild birds make it with only one leg.

If it can't fly, then Call the wildlife rescue in your town or city, they can help you decide what to do. You can take an eye droper and give him a drop of water to see if he will drink. put a small dish of water in the box, and if he is a seed eater. put a few tsp of bird seed. If he is a live eater (eats bugs worms etc.) Your pet shop will have what you need. Research the internet for what kind of bird it is, and what it likes to eat.

Hope this helps.
