Tips on taming and training cockatiel2007-11-24 17:25:00

I just got my cockateil today. She is 5 months old. She is kinda shy and she hisses when I put my hand in her cage but she doesn't bite when I pick her up. She stays in my hand for about 2 minutes then flies away. I just had someone clip her wings about 10 minutes ago.

Answers:

WHEN IT IS YOUNG THEY DO HISS THEY SHOULD STOP IN ABOUT 2-3 MONTH. IF YOU PUT A WASH RAG IN BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR CLOTHS THEN YOU PUT IN YOUR BIRDS CAGE. THIS IS SO SHE COULD GET USED TO YOUR SMELL.

NOW TO KEEP HER FROM FLYING OFF IF YOU APPLY A LITTLE PRESSURE WITH YOUR THUMB TO HER FEET THIS WILL SHOW HER THAT YOU ARE THE BOSS AFTER AWHILE OF DOING THIS SHE SHOULD STOP TRYING TO FLY AWAY. IF SHE TRYS TO BITE YOU BLOW EASYLY IN HER FACE OR LITELY TAP HER BEEK.

The wing cliping was one of the best things you could do. It will keep her from crashing into something and flying out the door and freezing to death this winter or being eaten by something. If she don't starve first. Wing cliping makes her depenit on you so she will make closer friends with you.. Get her some cackatiel feed with good mix of seeds and pellets or extruted pellets mix with seeds. They love hot peppers.

I let my tiel pick me and she has never hissed at me yet that I remember. I got her when she was 5 months old as well. She will hiss at my other bird or the cat but not normally at people.

Get your new friend out of the cage as much as you like and let her set on you while you read or are on the computer. I have yet to be able to make mine talk or potty train her. The conure caught on quick on both. Maybe it just takes more time.
