Today I saw an unusual bird in my back garden2007-11-24 17:16:26

..can anyone identify a bird I saw in my back garden this morning?

It had a head and neck like a heron, blue feathered wings, and a large feathered tail that was black and white, rather like a magpie's. It was the same over-all size as a pigeon.

Any ideas anyone?

thank you, Gerald Loder.

Answers:

This sounds a bit like a heron-necked, heron-headed, blue-feathered, black and white tailed, pigeon-sized magpie impersonating bird. Or not

You think that's strange, Big Bird chased me down the street today hurling curse words in my direction.
A herpiegon.
I don't know but go to www.birdsandblooms.com. They know all about birds and could find out the answer for you.
Where in the world are you ? Please advise.
Sounds like a fish eating bird, where do you live, near the coast?
if you see it again either lock yourself in doors or run like the devil was after you that is the grim reapers pet
Depending on where you are it might be a Belted Kingfisher, they are fairly common across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

I once saw a sparrow hawk in my back garden but had to keep it to myself, because lots of people in my area keep pigeons and they would kill it cos it goes after their birds! Shame really!
