Hi there, ive had my budgie a few weeks now and he perches on my finger ok and will sometimes sit on my shoulder, hes only about 8 weeks old i think.

Only problem is, once i get him out of the cage. the first thing he wants to do is get back in his cage.

He will do every effort to fly back into his cage. how can i keep him out? or keep him happy on my shoulder

Answers:

First of all cut his flight feathers then he won't be able to fly.

Second offer him one of these treats when he out of the cage:

Salad Cress - Peas - Apple - Celery - Courgette - Sweetcorn - Watercress - Boiled Rice - Parsley Sprig - Grapes - Cucumber - Dandelion Leaves - Broccoli - Broard Beans - Carrott - Finger of bread soaked in water - Mashed Boiled Egg (shell also) - Tomatoes - Lettuce - Cooked Pasta - Radishes (leaves also)

It will keep him healthy and live longer too

When you get him out, close his door, just let him sit on his cage, remember he is still unsure of everything, but remember to let him in after a short while so he can feed, just keep talking to him,so he gets used to you, don't rush him, also buy him some toys, repeat to him the same words and he will copy you, good luck, they are so much fun.
If he's only a baby he's probably frightened. Just let him settle in. Leave the cage door open so he can come out when he feels ready, it's no good being thuggish with him or it;ll take forever for him to trust you.
You could try using treats to keep him on your shoulder/ finger.
takes a while for a budgie to trust you - we are like giants compared to them - please dont grab your budgie let him come to you- stick out your hand and place it next to him when you are getting him in or out of the cage, you have to take steps - maybe when he comes out you could be the one to put him back in instead, this will make him feel safer, treats are great so he knows if he comes out he is rewarded and knows you are not a danger to him. alot of patience is needed but it will work just you wait and see.
